Learn Everything About Credit

Knowledge is your most powerful financial tool. Use these free resources to understand, protect, and build your credit profile.

What Is a Credit Report?

Your credit report is a detailed record of your borrowing history β€” every account, payment, and enquiry. It's used by banks, retailers, and landlords to decide whether to extend credit to you.

Foundation

How Long Does Info Stay?

In South Africa, most negative information stays on your report for 2 years. Judgements can remain for up to 5 years. Positive payment history stays indefinitely and works in your favour.

Timeline

Who Can See Your Report?

Only authorised parties can access your credit report β€” like lenders you've applied to, employers (with your consent), or landlords. Every access leaves an enquiry record.

Privacy

Your Rights Under the NCA

The National Credit Act gives you the right to one free credit report per year from each bureau, the right to dispute incorrect information, and the right to know why credit was declined.

Legal Rights
Payment History (Most Important)
This is the single biggest factor in your credit score. Lenders want to see that you pay on time, every time. Even one missed payment can have a significant negative impact and remains on your report for up to 2 years. Consistent on-time payments over time is the most reliable way to build a strong profile.
Credit Utilisation
This measures how much of your available credit you're using. For example, if your credit card limit is R10,000 and your balance is R9,500, your utilisation is 95% β€” which may hurt your score. Keeping utilisation below 30% of your available limit is generally viewed positively by lenders.
Amount of Debt
Lenders assess your total debt relative to your income. Someone earning R15,000 per month with R80,000 in debt is seen as higher risk than someone with R10,000 in debt. The lower your overall debt burden, the better your borrowing profile looks.
Length of Credit History
Older accounts give lenders a longer track record to evaluate. Closing old accounts β€” even those you no longer use β€” can sometimes reduce the average age of your credit history. Keep older accounts open and in good standing where possible.
Credit Applications (Enquiries)
Every time you apply for credit, an enquiry may appear on your profile. Multiple applications in a short period can signal to lenders that you may be financially stressed. Space out your applications and only apply when you genuinely need credit.

ScoreForge Tip

Your score is only one number β€” your full report tells the real story. We read every line so you understand exactly what lenders see when they assess you.

What Can Be Disputed?

You may dispute: incorrect balances, accounts that don't belong to you, duplicate accounts, identity theft accounts, incorrect payment history, outdated information, and incorrect personal details.

Disputable

What Cannot Be Removed?

Accurate negative information generally stays on your profile β€” legitimately missed payments, real defaults, accounts you actually opened. No company can legally remove accurate information.

Non-Disputable

The Dispute Process (5 Steps)

1. Identify incorrect info β†’ 2. Gather evidence (ID, proof of payment, settlement letters) β†’ 3. Submit to the bureau β†’ 4. Bureau investigates β†’ 5. Correction or confirmation within 20 business days.

Process

Beware of Scams

Be very cautious of anyone promising to "wipe your credit record" or remove accurate information for a fee. These are illegal practices. Disputes are free and only correct genuine errors.

Warning

❌ Credit Killers

Missing even one payment β€” a single missed payment can affect your profile significantly
Maxing out credit cards β€” high utilisation signals financial stress to lenders
Applying everywhere β€” multiple applications in a short period raises red flags
Ignoring collection notices β€” problems grow when left unaddressed
Not checking your report β€” errors can sit unnoticed for years
Co-signing carelessly β€” guaranteeing someone else's debt creates real risk for you

βœ… Credit Builders

Pay every account on time β€” consistency matters more than perfection
Check your report regularly β€” catch errors before they cause damage
Keep utilisation low β€” use less than 30% of your available credit
Keep older accounts open β€” a longer positive history benefits your score
Build a realistic budget β€” good credit starts with managing what you have
Space out applications β€” only apply for credit when you truly need it

Pro Tip: Check All Four

Different lenders report to different bureaus. Your information may vary across all four. Checking each one gives you the most complete picture of your credit profile β€” and increases your chances of spotting errors.
